Chapter 11 (Kylie)

One second, Roy was yelling at me and the next, he was shielding me with his body.

The inside of his house was eerily quiet and it didn’t take much for me to figure out that something was wrong. I could feel the anxiety rolling off the air. I pressed myself against his body, feeling safer that way. “What’s going on?” I whispered.

“Someone’s in here.”

“A security guard, maybe?”

“No. They never step foot inside the house. They’re constantly keeping watch.”

“Then, how did someone get in here?”

“That’s what I’d like to know.”

Creak.

Overhead, the ceiling groaned. Someone was upstairs. And, by the sound of it, they were rummaging through the guest bedroom.

“Stay here. Find a place to hide and stay here.”

“You’re crazy if you think I’m just going to let you go up there by yourself.”

“Stay here.” He insisted.

“Not going to happen.” To prove my point, I grabbed a nearby vase, holding it like a weapon.

“You look ridiculous.”

“You won’t be laughing when I save your life,” I said, tightening my grip around the ceramic. “You should grab one yourself.”

“I’m good, thanks.”

My heart was racing as we started up the stairs. I had no idea what to expect. A million and one horror movies went through my head. This was definitely where we would both get killed in some horrible ax murderer killing spree.

Creak!

Roy stepped onto a loose floorboard and it groaned so loudly that it seemed to echo throughout the entire house.

I gulped. Surely, whoever had broken in knew we were coming.

We waited but nothing happened so after a minute, Roy continued forward. He took his time, clinging to the wall, and avoiding all other squeaky floorboards.

Soon, we were standing in front of the guest bedroom and I swear my heart had never beat so fast in my entire life. Adrenaline pumped through my veins. I was holding onto the vase so tightly that my knuckles had turned white.

“Stay here,” Roy said, looking over his shoulder.

“Not a chance,” I whispered back. “We’re in this together.”

“I’m not going to forgive you.”

“That’s not what I’m trying to do. I want to make sure you’re safe.”

It didn’t look like he believed me. Well, that’s his problem. Right now, all that mattered was finding out who was inside that room.

He reached for the doorknob but just then, someone squealed with excitement.

“Do you know what this is?” A mysterious woman exclaimed in a high-pitched voice.

“What?” Came a deep, guttural response.

“My bag. Well, the bag. Had some guy bring it through airport security but he was a complete idiot and grabbed the wrong bag from baggage claim. I swear, everyone is such an idiot these days. I can’t get good help even if I wanted it.”

“What’s inside?” Asked the deep voice.

“A fortune.”

“Of course, it would be her...” Roy mumbled underneath his breath.

“Huh? Do you know who it is?”

“Mhm.”

“Who?”

His face clouded over, features becoming dark. I could tell that whoever it was, he wasn’t happy to see them.

“Ex-wife.”

For some reason, his response hit me like a freight train. It never dawned on me that this man could have a wife – or, in this case, an ex-wife.
